Introducing the Egyptian God Atum

Who is Atum?

Atum, who is sometimes also known as Temu or Tem, was believed to be the first Ancient Egyptian god who was worshipped in Iunu. While Ru later became a similar figure in the city, Atum was one of the most powerful gods of the time. In the Old Kingdom in Lower Egypt, he was incredibly popular, and he was often associated throughout the country with the Pharaoh. Within the Heliopolitan Ennead, Atum was named as the creator god, and we can see evidence of his presence dating back to the Pyramid Texts and Coffin Texts.

The name Atum was derived from tm, which means to finish or to complete. That’s why Atum is believed to be the creator or finisher of the world, and it’s stated that he was the underlying substance of the world and anything created at this time. If you are wondering how Atum ties in with our solar energy company, it’s because he was also a solar deity. He was associated with the sun god Ra, but Atum was specifically linked with the evening sun, whereas Ra was connected with the morning sun.

The sun setting each night symbolizes different things to each of us. Atum was closely linked with the setting sun, and when he was drawn during earlier times, it showed him as an ancient figure. He needed the sun to set so he could rest and regenerate himself ready for the following morning. Early records featuring Atum show him appearing from the earth as he created himself. He spat out air and moisture, and his two offspring became lost in the dark. He sent his eye out to look for them, and when they were returned, they were named Shu and Tefnut, representing life and order.

Atum has also been linked with solar theology, and it’s said he was the self-developing scarab representing the new sun. In the Pyramid and Coffin texts, we see him combined with Ra to become Re-Atum. When Re-Atum dies at dusk each night, he then resurrects himself before dawn as the sun comes up. It’s a wonderful vision that very much aligns with our use of solar energy. In the rare texts where we see a picture of Atum, he’s often shown as a man with a royal head-cloth. Sometimes he is shown as a serpent, and occasionally he’s referenced as a lion, bull, ape, or mongoose.

As you can see, there’s a lot of mystery surrounding Atum, which is why we’ve always found him to be such a fascinating character. Ancient history shares so many trials and tribulations, just like the ones we are facing today to save our planet.
